About Insomnia

Insomnia is clinically defined as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or having non-restorative sleep. And, as anyone suffering from insomnia knows, it affects all aspects of your life.

Compared with good sleepers, people with insomnia are more prone to accidents, have diminished job performance, decreased quality of life, and increased health care costs.  In fact, people with insomnia spend 60% more on health care! Poor sleep can also lead to depression and other mental health problems. None of this is news to you if you are unable to sleep well.

However, it is important for you to know that insomnia is not "all in your head".  Many insomnia patients have dysregulated cortisol, high metabolic rates, decreased heart rate variability and other factors leading to hyper-arousal and difficulty sleeping.  Aside from this type of 'primary insomnia', there are also 'secondary' causes of insomnia such as restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea and some chronic illnesses. These are serious sleep problems, but with proper diagnosis, there is help for insomnia.
